Screen time, the amount of time using a device with a screen, has become an issue for mobile phones since the adaptation of smartphones. Contrary to popular misconception, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) does not actually prohibit the use of personal electronic devices (including cell phones) on aircraft. Japan prohibits all mobile phone use while driving, including use of hands-free devices.
The race to create truly portable telephone devices began after World War II, with developments taking place in many countries. Early predecessors of cellular phones included analog radio communications from ships and trains. The growth in popularity has been rapid in some places; for example, in the UK, the total number of mobile phones overtook the number of houses in 1999. In addition, they enable multimedia playback and streaming, including video content, as well as radio and television streaming. Modern mobile telephony relies on a cellular network architecture, which is why mobile phones are often referred to as ‘cell phones’ in North America.

Beyond traditional voice communication, digital mobile phones have evolved to support a wide range of additional services.

History

The original town of Mobile was built on lower ground just downriver from the fort. The Fort Louis de la Louisiane was built on a bluff that today is 27 miles (43 km) upriver from the Mobile River’s rivo casino mouth. In 1702, French colonists founded the Old Mobile Site south of existing Native American villages on the Mobile River.

In February 2014, 93% of mobile developers were targeting smartphones first for mobile app development. There are a huge variety of apps, including video games, music products and business tools. The first mobile news service, delivered via SMS, was launched in Finland in 2000, and subsequently many organizations provided “on-demand” and “instant” news services by SMS. A common data application on mobile phones is Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging. Of the two, Android has been the best-selling system worldwide on smartphones since 2011, and as of March 2025, Android had 71.9% of the overall market share, while iOS had 27.7%. Feature phones have basic software platforms whilst smartphones have a fully-featured operating system (commonly abbreviated to an OS), with the two most-used platforms being Android and iOS.

Beginning in the late 1980s, newly elected mayor Mike Dow and the city council began an effort termed the “String of Pearls Initiative” to make Mobile into a competitive city. Since the change to single-member districts, more women and African Americans were elected to the council than under the at-large system. In 1985, Mobile’s state legislative delegation enacted a mayor-council form of government, with seven members elected from single-member districts. The federal district court ordered that the three students be admitted to Murphy for the 1964 school year, leading to the desegregation of Mobile County’s school system. George E. McNally, Mobile’s first Republican mayor since Reconstruction, was the driving force behind the founding of the IDB. Between 1940 and 1943, more than 89,000 people moved into Mobile to work for war effort industries.
The Mobile Carnival Museum houses the city’s Mardi Gras history and memorabilia. The Mobile Police Department Museum chronicles the history of the city’s law enforcement. It serves as the official welcome center and a colonial-era living history museum. The Fort of Colonial Mobile is a reconstruction of the city’s original Fort Condé, built on the original fort’s footprint. It features the World War II era battleship USS Alabama, the World War II era submarine USS Drum, Korean War and Vietnam War Memorials, and historical military equipment. The Doy Leale McCall Rare Book and Manuscript Library at the University of South Alabama are open to the public and house primary sources relating to the history of the university, Mobile, and southern Alabama.

In other countries, including the UK and France and in many US states, only handheld phone use is banned while hands-free use is permitted. In March 2011, a US insurance company, State Farm Insurance, announced the results of a study which showed 19% of drivers surveyed accessed the Internet on a smartphone while driving. In September 2010, the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 995 people were killed by drivers distracted by cell phones. Restrictions on the use of mobile phones are applied in a number of different contexts, often with the goal of health, safety, security or proper functioning of an establishment, or as a matter of etiquette. Such phones are approved for use by essential workers, such as health, security, and public service workers. In Israel, similar phones to kosher phones with restricted features exist to observe the sabbath; under Orthodox Judaism, the use of any electrical device is generally prohibited during this time, other than to save lives, or reduce the risk of death or similar needs.
The Bragg-Mitchell Mansion (1855), Richards DAR House (1860), and Condé-Charlotte House (1822) are antebellum house museums. The Mobile Medical Museum in the French colonial-style Vincent-Doan House chronicles the history of medicine in the city. The Phoenix Fire Museum in the restored Phoenix Volunteer Fire Company Number 6 building covers fire companies dating to 1838. The History Museum of Mobile showcases centuries of local history in the Old City Hall. The Centre for the Living Arts is an organization that operates the historic Saenger Theatre and Space 301, a contemporary art gallery.

In most jurisdictions, prison inmates are forbidden from possessing mobile phones due to their ability to communicate with the outside world and other security issues.
